Carole King - Tapestry (1971)

So I totally forgot who Carole King was before I started listening to Tapestry. Then the album starts off with "I Feel The Earth Move" and it all came rushing back. Carole King is one of the essential classic pop singers back when pop music wasn't disposable trash. OK, so I'm sure the majority of pop music back then was also disposable trash which is why I've never been exposed to that stuff. But seriously, who these days is making music that sounds as good as Tapestry? Who sings blues in such a soulful alto? Who combines nearly perfect tone with such power and grit? Who writes such perfect lyrics?

Seriously, Carole King's music has such great hooks and emotionally moving vocals. I'm listening to the album's version of "You've Got A Friend" (which I thought was a James Taylor song, but nope, this is the original and far superior recording). I guess it's not fair to criticize pop music culture today for not creating any timeless classics, mainly because with "You've Got A Friend" I have 4 decades of hindsight. But seriously, where are the new timeless pop classics, modern pop music? Basically Tapestry is a collection of of timeless pop ballads interspersed with some easy-going groovy tunes.

So yeah, turns out I love Carole King. It's not that hard. 4 stars.
