Solomon Burke - Rock N' Soul (1964)

Solomon Burke has the classic rock n' roll blues/soul voice that appeals to me. He sings in a rough high tenor, and when the mood calls for it he explodes with a powerful howl. Sound like anyone else I might like? Other than that, Rock N' Soul sounds pretty much like a late 50s to early 60s rock album. It's one of the greatest forms of pop music ever created and this album is well written and performed.

My only issue is with the sound quality. As usual a rock album recorded in the mid-60s sounds tinny and hollow compared to a lot of stuff recorded a decade before. But it's not that big a deal in this case. Solomon Burke can wail, and he's assembled a talented backing band and chorus to belt out some rock and soul standards. On top of that the album is a quick listen at 34 minutes. I can't complain about that. 4 stars.
