PJ Harvey - Dry (1992)
Never heard of PJ Harvey, so I can't really speak to her whole catalogue. Dry is an angry grunge album typical of the 90s. The instrumentation mostly reminds me of early Black Sabath- low heavy chunky guitar/bass riffs with tight drumming. A couple songs have scratchy string arrangements which are mostly used to tear apart the melody. Harvey has a soft voice but manages to sing angry without straining or screaching. It makes the album heavy without being too much. The songs are a bit repetitive but the album is a quick and easy listen. As long as you don't listen to it back-to-back with another grunge album the sound shouldn't overstay its welcome. 3 stars.
