Jimmy Smith - Back At The Chicken Shack (1963)
Jimmy Smith is a blues/jazz organist, for those among us (like me) who had never heard of him. The title track is an 8-minute long soft 12-bar blues number that refuses to quit. It just slogs and repeats and keeps the energy really low. If you're going to listen to Back At The Chicken Shack feel free to fade out the first number after about 2 minutes. There won't be anything else of note coming.
Please don't listen to this album if you are feeling tired, especially if you're at work. Back At The Chicken Shack is very mello. The band within appears to consist of an organ, a jazz drummer hammering out the dsss-dt-dt-dsss-dt-dt-dsss, a quiet bass, and a saxophonist. Jimmy Smith has them playing music you could talk over if you were at a jazz lounge. The fills are kept mostly short and sweet, giving the songs plenty of structure as opposed to most jazz I've heard. But it's a pretty dull and quiet listen. The songs stretch out over 8, 9, and 12 minute lengths, so it's not a quick dull and quiet either. Sigh, 2 stars.
