Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk (1996)
(originally posted on Facebook)
The album starts off as a pleasant minimalist indie-rock/folk fusion. Bit of a mouthful, I know, but hopefully descriptive The vocalist is a very soft tenor, and the early songs begin with acoustic guitar melodies that slowly flourish into lovely classical arrangements. I honestly didn't expect so much from a mid-90s album. The album's middle songs take a detour into electronica and kitschy-pop. The dichotomy between the folk opening and heavy synths is striking. The music delves deeper into the classical before ending on some light jangle pop and folk. Overall a very well constructed and arranged album. I do wish the lead vocalist was a bit stronger. His limited range and melodies kept the songs from being truly awesome. 4 stars.
