Paul Simon - Paul Simon (1972)
(originally posted on Facebook)
I wasn't expecting Paul Simon to open with a reggae song. I am most familiar with Simon through his collaboration with Art Garfunkle, and this, his second solo album, starts out with the soft acoustic folk tones of that era minus the lovely harmonies the two created. Simon has a nice voice by himself and has written some nice music here. It does seem a bit less epic without the extra harmony part. I think I like it better. Simon's solo music, at least here, is much less severe and much more fun, if not quite as musically interesting as his time with Garfunkle. The album slogs a bit at the end with some pretty standard blues numbers. I'll say 3 stars.
