The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)

So I saw this article on Buzzfeed... Lou Reed Thought The Beatles “Were Garbage”. The subheadline read "I mean, they were just painfully stupid and pretentious." Now I'm certainly not a huge fan of The Beatles. On some level I appreciate anyone who's willing to  take a shot across the bow of the unassailable Beatles Fanship. But Lou Reed? Calling someone else pretentious? Whoa...

Bee Gees - Odessa (1969)

So... Bee Gees. Everyone knows "Staying Alive" by Bee Gees, and everyone loves that one song by Bee Gees. So clearly there are two things that could make this listen and review a total disaster. First, are there actual Bee Gees fans out there that salivate over entire albums by this band? Not that popularity alone would legitimize whether or not an album or band were good. But a band that had such an Earth-smashing hit like "Staying Alive" you'd think would get some sort of fandom. I just never hear from such fans, unlike say people who love ABBA. Second, this album came out before "Staying Alive" and disco became big. What the hell is early Bee Gees going to sound like? Actually, since I only know that one song, and for all I know it's a total outlier, what the hell are Bee Gees going to sound like at all?

Fatboy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry (1996)

Oh fuck me sideways. Why do I have to listen to more shit by Fatboy Slim? Why do I have to listen to any more albums put out by DJs? And why the fuck does a Fatboy Slim album have to be 70 minutes long? This is gonna hurt. I already know it. But I can't just skip it. I have to endure it.

Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)

So far I haven't really enjoyed my deeper dives into Pink Floyd music. I like some of the band's music but more on an individual song basis and not all in one continuous sitting. This time might be different. The Dark Side of the Moon is the album that vaulted the band to superstardom, while The Wall is their career-defining epic.

Meanwhile The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is their debut, when they were still a relatively unknown band led by the enigmatic Syd Barrett. Roger Waters, who wrote most of the stuff you know as "Pink Floyd music" was a supporting player for this album, and David Gilmour, my personal favorite member of Pink Floyd, wasn't a part of the band at this point. I am extremely intrigued by the possibilities of this prototype Pink Floyd, even though debut albums tend to be extremely rough around the edges.

Eminem - The Slim Shady LP (1999)

I've been putting this off for too long. This one has stopped me in my tracks for weeks. I seriously considered abandoning my whole project just so I'd never have to listen to another minute of Eminem for the rest of my life. I know what you're thinking. If it's so loathsome, why not just skip it? The rules are completely arbitrary, and I've skipped stuff before or jumped ahead in my order when it suited me. Well, I don't want to make a habit of that. Also, it's been a while since I listened to a rap album, so I'm probably due.
