Dexys Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay (1982)

(originally posted on Facebook)

If you like the song "Come on Eileen" (the original, not the shitty remake by Save Ferris) I see no reason you wouldn't like a full album of similar material. The only problem is the novelty wears off really quickly. Where "Come On Eileen" by itself has a unique and catchy sound, extending that same tone over the length of an LP removes the mystique of that quirkiness. I quickly realized that the lead singer's voice and accent are difficult to take seriously. It's like he's trying to cross Freddie Mercury's voice with Ric Ocasek's adding a touch of Dick Van Dyke's terrible cockney accent. I find it hard to believe that's anything like his natural voice, it just sounds too forced. The music is well composed and arranged, and has a decent amount of variety to offset the jokey vocals. The arrangements features piano, horns, and fiddles and blend them nicely. With another lead singer I probably would have thoroughly enjoyed this album. As it is I mearly enjoyed it. 3 stars.
