808 State - 90 (1989)
(originally posted on Facebook)
808 State was a pioneer in the "British House Music" genre. I tend to call this "Euro-Trash Techno". There really isn't much to distinguish it from other techno music, except for maybe European techno music focuses more on the beat than on loud instrumentals. This is music you should listen to in an upscale club filled with white people bathed in neon lights after taking a lot of ectasy. Maybe then you might be inspired to dance. Otherwise it just sounds like a shitty 80s videogame soundtrack. 1 star.
Note: I usually start writing my reviews as I listen to the album. I do this in part to save time, to see how predictable the upcoming songs will be, but primarily to keep track of my thoughts as I listen. Sometimes I wind up finishing a review partway through, but most of the time I wind up going back to revise something I had written earlier. I finished the above review for 90 about halfway through the second track. I kept listening hoping I'd have to revise it because my first impression was just so wrong by the end. Turns out I didn't.
