The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace of Sin (1969)

(originally posted on Facebook)

This is an early country-rock album. If you've never heard of The Flying Burrito Brothers, think Allman Brothers but crunchier and more country-er. The music is certainly familiar- a pleasant mix of soulful harmonies with airy twanging guitars. There are only three or four beats that this brand of rock utilizes- a slow waltzy 3/4, a shuffling cut-time, and a moderate 4/4... maybe a slightly faster 4/4 like a hoe-down. The strongest moments of the album come from "Hot Burrito #1" and "Hot Burrito #2", the two containing the least influence of country-rock. By the time comes to its conclusion, a spoken word poem of a little hippie boy... zzzzz... I have never been more sick of the slide guitar in my life. What does country-rock have to do with burritos in the first place? 2-stars.
