Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)

(originally posted on Facebook)

Every cliche you've ever heard about thrash metal is true. It's loud, it's fast, it's angry... it's formulaic. I really hate genres that are defined by their derivative. You can't have a slow happy thrash metal song can you? It's amazing how fast these songs are without really generating any energy. You can only listen to so many super fast drum fills or screeching guitar solos before you start yawning- at least before I start yawning. Rock and roll was never supposed to just be about the volume or the speed or who's yelling the loudest and angriest.

Granted good rock music does sound better loud. No one will ever convince me that a song like "Black Dog" shouldn't be played at chest-thumping volume. Now there's a rich piece of music. Fantastic crazy riff and shifting beat that somehow creates a funky groove, and a soulful howling lead vocal. All that is missing from Rust in Peace, particularly the vocals. Why does one of the most famous heavy metal bands of all time have such a wimpy vocalist? I will say all the musicians on this album are technically outstanding at what they do. That's never enough. Talent can and has been wasted before. 1 star.
