This is the first album I have been unable to find through Rdio.com since I've been using that service. I also couldn't find it through Myspace, and as Gillian Welch is an acoustic country/folk I doubted any of my friends would be able to lend it to me. Luckily I was able to find all but one of the album's tunes through various internet channels. Missing a tune in the middle of the album means I won't get the full experience of listening, and the songs are preceeded by ads for Kellogg's Crunchy Nut. But I'll still get 90%, which is enough to pass judgment.
Like most of the albums I've heard there is very little variation in sound from one song to the next. They are all played straight- two guitarists, or a guitarist and a banjo player (banjoist? banjoer?) Gillian on lead and some dude doing a folksy/country harmony. Lovely, but boring. Same with the compositions, they sound mostly like standards. I won't call them clichéd because they weren't that bad. I just think they could have used more arranging than just two guitarists. 2 stars.
