Stereo MC's - Connected (1993)

(originally posted on Facebook)
Released in 1993, this album really is stuck between the shitty reverb-heavy style of the 80s and the cleaner, thicker, digitalized sound of the late 90s (and onwards). I have no idea what is special about Connected. It definitely wants to be a dance album. All the songs have the same flat lifeless tempo and boring repetitive basslines. But it is so soft and inoffensive. It's like dance muzak, something you might play at an elevator or department store rave.

Actually, the best metaphor I can think of is it's white people rap. You know that episode of South Park where Chef laments about white people falling in love with everything black people come up with and making it lame? That's what Stereo MCs have done on Connected. They've taken the hip-hop black people made in the 80s but toned it down to a form white people might listen to. They're the Pat Boone of hip-hop. At least Connected is.

Can't really say I hated it. But that's the point of muzak, right? 2 stars.

Mo K - I love reading these posts. I love that you have such reflective and well thought out comments. I don't listen to music the same way you do, but it's interesting.
