Wild Beasts - Two Dancers (2009)

(originally posted on Facebook)

Dreary, atmospheric, and boring. The dancers referenced by the album title must be at one of those slow-motion raves, because the music is all techno and synthy, but the beat is minimilist. I'm starting to realize that "indie rock" doesn't really mean a rock band that produces their music independant of the studio system. It actually is a genre, and a pretty specific one. It's almost like indie rock has gone from rebeling against the system to becoming the system. If you're not ethereal and dour you can't be indie rock. This might not be the case but I'm pretty sure every song on this album was in the same key. Maybe it just sounded that way because Wild Beasts did almost nothing to distinguish one song from the next. Every song begins with a simple instrumental pattern that is slowly and barely built upon. It's hard to get involved with the music when by the fifth song I don't expect anything new or interesting. 2 stars.
