Cream - Disraeli Gears (1967)
(originally posted on Facebook)
In a twisted way I was kinda hoping this album would suck. It's mostly about Eric Clapton. Does anyone else agree with me that his later career has kinda sucked balls? Especially in light of him at one time being the premier blues-rock guitarist in the world? I can't really say Clapton is overrated, because it's hard to ignore how he started. It just seems like he's been doing the same lame soft blues shit for twenty years.
Anyway, Disraeli Gears is not about that Eric Clapton, or even really about Clapton at all. While there is plenty of the blues roots that defined rock of the era, this album is also thick in the psychadelic, which after what happened at the end of Kick Out The Jams I'm a bit adverse to. But the guys in Cream are far more restrained and realize that not everyone will be taking acid when they listen and will want to hear actual music. I was kinda shocked that this album despite its reputation only contained two recognizable hits, "Strange Brew" and "Sunshine Of Your Love". Not that the rest was junk, but it is weird that such a heralded band would have so few long-lasting hits.
The album is largely a product of its time complete with a crunchy sound and completely washed out drums. I'm told Baker is a fantanstic jazz drummer but you'd never know it- it sounds like he's banging on cardboard boxes. The band is pretty tight and have a good harmony. I liked it. 3 stars.
