Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left (1969)
(originally posted on Facebook)
Nick Drake is not really a mystery. He is a soft folk singer who prefers his thin voice and an acoustic guitar. I have no problem with that. The sound is a bit repetitive from song to song. But each song has its own flavor, provided by minimalist composition on an assortment of instruments. It's nice to hear an album with fully acoustic instruments, including stand-up bass, flute, and strings. I do lean towards complexity when I am impressed with music, but simple pleasures make Five Leaves Left a damn fine album. I give it 4 stars. It's been a while since I've said that.
